“A contemporary shamanic experience”
Former principal cellist of the Torbay Symphony Orchestra, Ben has performed in world-class venues including the Royal Festival Hall and Royal Albert Hall, and studied with Trinity Laban’s David Kenedy. Applying techniques that range from baroque articulation to extended avant-garde textures, his work dismantles inherited musical structures to create raw, immersive soundscapes – dispensing with conventional harmony in favour of alternative tunings, and haunting architectural stillnesses. Signed to Bella Union as part of the post-rock collective Silver Moth, Ben now turns his attention to solo works exploring transition, perception, and the energy of sound.
Spanning the intersecting realms of classical performance, sound design, punk philosophy and spiritual inquiry, cellist Ben Roberts creates immersive sonic rituals rooted in both orchestral tradition and experimental composition. His live performances weave modern understandings of frequency with ancient shamanic and Vedic principles, inviting audiences into a shared state of deep listening and transformation. Using cello, electric cello, drum machine and pedal boards, each unrepeatable set unfolds as a guided journey through resonance, intuition and release.

“My latest album TRANSITION is a reflection on the inner and outer metamorphoses we are going through as individuals, and as a civilisation, right now,” explains Ben, who is passionate about the importance of humanity’s role as artists amongst a rising tide of AI generated content.
“The TRANSITION project is all about journeys. My musical journey, from classical cellist to experimental composer. My personal journey, growing up as a man, and a father. And our collective journey as a society, from afamiliar cozy past into a future I suspect none of us can really imagine.”
